Colleges, adult education centres, workplaces, museums, libraries and other community and voluntary organisations can highlight their commitment to learning and inspire adults to discover fun ways to learn, by holding an event, open day or taster session for Adult Learners' Week (12-18 May 2012).

NIACE has welcomed the Government's announcement today of more advice, information and support for parents.

Carol Taylor, Director for Development and Research at NIACE, said:

The Community Learning Trusts pilot scheme will give local people a say in decisions about their local adult learning courses and bring better value for money for taxpayers. Application forms are available here and must be submitted to clt@niace.org.uk by 5pm on Friday 25 May.

A national policy conference to explore current and emerging challenges and approaches to widening participation in adult education, was held by NIACE and The Open University on Tuesday 15 May, as part of Adult Learners' Week (12-18 May 2012).

The conference was one of a series of national events to celebrate Adult Learners' Week (12 - 18 May 2012), the first being a national ceremony for award winners held in London on Monday 14 May, which received a message of support Rt Hon David Cameron MP, Prime Minister and Conservative Party Leader:

An 'invitation only' seminar exploring the rapidly-changing digital landscape and how it affects learning opportunities for adults was held by NIACE on 10 May, in the presence of its Royal Patron, HRH The Princess Royal.

Alastair Thomson, NIACE Principal Advocacy and Policy Officer, said:

Around 3 in 5 adults (62 per cent) have not participated in learning in the last 3 years and over one-third (36 per cent) have not participated at all since they left full-time education. These are the headline findings of the 2012 NIACE participation survey, published today ahead of Adult Learners' Week (12-18 May).

The annual survey, once again, clearly shows that participation in learning is determined by class, age, employment status and prior learning and attainment. The key findings are:
